I was a professional clown for more than 20 years. During that career, I visited terminally ill children in hospitals.
The first day I visited a child that had only a few days to live, I was not allowed in the room.
Maybe you are thinking, that the parents had other things on their minds than allowing a clown to visit. Maybe you would think the same in that situation?
There I was.
Standing outside the room, not be able to visit a child that really could use some laughter.
That moment I got to make a powerful choice.
I had to be a powerful leader for that child.
I could have walked away and no one would have blamed me. Everybody would have understood. I would have been considered as the right thing to do.
Leaders know better.
That’s not what powerful leaders do. They lean in because they know that what they are doing makes a huge difference in the world.
I knew that a visit would make a world of difference for the child but also for the parents.
This is what I did.
I went into the room despite the fact they didn’t invite me and did my job.
I made the child laugh!
Within minutes the atmosphere in the room changed. As soon as the child started laughing the parents started laughing too.
Then they started crying.
I can assure you they were tears of joy. It was a beautiful moment. The parents couldn’t thank me enough afterwards.
It made me realize that I needed to be a leader.
It’s all is about being a leader. It’s about taking action and constantly stepping out of your comfort zone.
It’s about loving people and doing what’s best for them even when they are not aware of it themselves.
That’s what powerful leaders do.
They move forward despite all the crosswinds and challenges.
They will not let anyone stop them to achieve their goals and dreams.
How are you leading our life?
