It’s too much.

The information.

The next eBook.

The post to write or read.

The funny message to forward.

The next picture for Instagram.

It’s just too much!

I am going crazy!

We are diving full force in this digital world. Since Corona, it got worse!

Why is it that in Belgium by law shops have an obliged closing day?

Now I know.

F**ked up social media sh*t is making me realize why closing down once in a while isn’t such a bad idea.

You can put off your smartphone. But since everybody else keeps using it, what's the point of turning your device off?

Maybe it's time to put down the internet one day a week?

I'm sure we would never agree on what day that would be, but just for the sake of this discussion.

Wouldn’t that be nice?

Oh no, then we have to talk to people again and will have long conversations without being interrupted by the sound of an incoming email, tweet, what's app, SMS, messenger, and whatever people are putting on their phones. And please don't tell me you put your phone in silent mode! That makes it even worse. Someone who suddenly grabs his phone to look at it, or even take a call.

Seriously, I think, that would be so nice! Let’s call it ‘social media break’.

Just one day a week.

Let's do that instead of endless discussions about facemasks, Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Black Lives matter, and whatever will be the next hype. Even the hypes don't last longer than a few weeks anymore. I'm wondering who creates them. Is it us?

We find ourselves in a race that doesn't seem to end. Maybe young people are better equipped to deal with it, but do they still have meaningful conversations with all these interruptions? Can we still have a meaningful relationship with each other? Or do we even check messages during sex nowadays?

I admit I catch myself regularly sending messages to people who are on the same table.

A few years ago, I would call you insane if you told me this.

But now.

Nobody minds. It's normal.

But is it?

Didn’t we experience during this COVID-19 crisis that people need social contact? Unfortunately, this social engagement is superseded by social media. If you still want to call it social?

Did we need that much social media?

Don’t get me wrong, everything has its place in this world, but I believe we have reached a point that we can't call it social media anymore.

Or am I just getting old?

By the way, let me know which day you suggest we shut everything down.
